The consumer advocate group Which? has uncovered charges of up to 3% added by some councils when customers pay their council services bills with a credit card. Through Freedom of Information requests, the consumer watchdog discovered a minimum of 55 councils were charging their customers’ credit cards these fees, with 12 councils adding at least 2% to the total owed for services. Two of the councils looked at were adding charges to both debit card and credit card transactions.
